Any homeowner who must resort to using his or her garage floor as the place to work on those home improvement projects is sorely in need of a garage workbench. It’s very simple to build a garage workbench from two-by-fours, wood screws and bolts if you don’t require anything too fancy.

But if your do-it-yourself projects are a bit more complicated you can purchase a garage workbench with all the drawers, shelves, and pegboard backing you may need to store your tools and project materials. The manner in which you get your garage workbench is not nearly as important as the fact that you finally have one, and can once again use your garage floor to store your automobile!

Building Or Buying A Good Garage Workbench

If your at-home carpentry jobs have been taking place in the driveway or on the floor of your garage, you can build you own garage workbench tailored to fit your personal needs, and you don’t need to spend a lot of money doing it. A garage workbench will spare you back and knees, and, if you decide to make it a bit more complex, will have drawers and shelves in which you can keep the tools ad materials for your carpentry jobs.

You garage workbench will be more durable if you construct it with wood screws and bolts instead of nails, which tend to work loose after a while, and a wobbly workbench is not a safe carpentry setting. A very basic workbench consists of a wooden plank sized for your needs, and
Four evenly-cut two-by-fours which will be its legs. You can cut the legs to whatever length places the surface of the garage workbench at a comfortable height; a thirty-one inch high workbench work well for most people.

Industrial Garage Workbenches

If you want something a little fancier, and don’t have the time required to put together a garage workbench with shelving or drawers, you can by a light industrial garage work bench for less than $100. An industrial garage workbench is usually constructed with a steel frame and laminated wood bench top. Different models of this type of garage workbench will have drawers or cabinets, or even a pegboard back on which you can hang your tools.

If you are someone who does a lot of large project carpentry, or works on your car’s parts at your garage workbench, you might be better served with a heavier industrial garage workbench, made of heavier steel and with a steel bench top. These workbenches are also available with storage drawers.

Any garage workbench you build or by should be large enough and sturdy enough to support the weight of a vise. You’ll be using your garage workbench as the cornerstone of your workshop, so make sure that it is as durable a workbench as you can afford. And whatever you do, don’t be concerned about you garage workbench getting banged up. Dents, scrapes, and scratches are all in a good day’s work when it comes to hour latest DYI project.

You should, after all, be far more interested in the beauty of your finished effort than any scars your garage workbench suffered during its completion!

If you want to design your own garage but aren’t sure how to make certain the final results will be as professional as you like, you can take advantage of several design hel options.

An Internet search will take you to sites like Plan3D, where for a small monthly fee you can design your own garage by creating a set of blueprints with the site’s software application. Homeplans.com has dozens of sets of garage plans which you can download and use to design your own garage, with both blueprints and lists of all the materials you’ll need.

You can also design your own garage and build it as well by ordering it as a prefab garage kit.

3 Ways To Design Your Own Garage

If you have decided to design your own garage, either by constructing a completely new one or by remodeling and existing one on your property, you are probably in search of ideas. Even if you know what features you want to incorporate when you design your own garage, you may not have the technical expertise to work them into a building plan, but don’t want the expense of paying a contractor to prepare the plan for you. Do you have alternatives?

Yes, and a wide variety of them. You can begin by investigating the different software programs available which will give you all the help you need to design your own garage blueprints. One of the better-known software programs is Plan3D.

Software Programs
You can subscribe to Plan3D online and, for a small monthly fee, use their service to design your own garage with all the features you want, and then view both its interior and exterior from every conceivable angle. If you’d like to design your own garage from plans you found elsewhere, you can even scan them to thePlan3D program and get a clear picture of how the finished garage will look in three dimensions.

If you don’t have any idea of where to find plans from which you can design your own garage, you can again do an online search. Many online companies have libraries of garage plans available for immediate downloading; these plans will include not only blueprints, but complete instructions on the materials you’ll need to get your garage constructed.

Finding Garage Plans Online
Homeplans.com is one such site, which in addition to having hundreds of plans for houses, has plans for both garages with workshops and garages with living space from which you can get ideas to design your own garage.

Prefab Garage Kits
If you think you’d not only like to design your own garage, but construct it as well, look into the many prefabricated garage kits now available. Built from galvanized steel, they come prepared to assemble and can usually be constructed in les than a day with three or four people working on them.

If you do not have the necessary manpower to assemble a prefab garage, many manufacturers can provide construction crews for an additional expense. You will have to check with your zoning board to find out if steel structures are permitted in you area, and what dimensions are acceptable for garages. You’ll also have to pour a foundation for the unit, to provide it with extra stability.

You can have a hand in the design of your own garage by telling the prefab company what features you’d like to incorporate in the unit. You can further customize it by choosing among the many available styles and colors.
