The 21st century garage door is a far cry from the side-hinged wooden doors which protected the automobiles of fifty years ago, and today the garage door is seen as one of a home’s most prominent architectural features. The cost of garage doors is now rising faster that that of any other home feature on a per-square-foot basis, and because so many people now use their garage door as their homes’ main entry and exit point, garage doors have to operate reliably as well as look good over the long term. Garage doors also play major roles in home security systems.

The Garage Door: More Than A Dwelling Style Accomplice

The garage door has gone from being an object of function to an object that could very well define your home. More and more people in the US are spending more on the garage door as it’s not just functional anymore; it’s now a leading design feature of the home.

Home owners have started to increase spend on their garage doors as its surpassed mere functionality and has become a proud design feature of the home. The amount spent per square foot on garage doors has gone up more than any other room or part of the house. This is emphasized by the act that Architects are now turning to lead garage door suppliers and installers for advice to include the most popular garage door designs as part of their draft plans. The garage door is the largest moveable appliance in your home. It’s not just about how it looks, but how it works. Or at least it should be.

Give Your House A Worth Look:

The garage door is used to access homes more than the main entry door of US homes. This of course made popular after the creation of automated garage doors, where most home owners could conveniently drive right into their garage without having the hassle of stepping out of their car and manually lifting the heavy door. A garage is home to your personal automobiles and usually a large selection of sporting goods and tools. Therefore in order to keep these possessions safe the right choice of garage door is vital.

A garage door is one of the most important components of your garage. It not only provides security but also can be a design statement for the rest of your property. Before you build a garage or decide to give you exist one a facelift, it is essential for you to determine the style, shape and size of your garage doors. This will give you a fair idea on how much drive through width you require and also so you don’t end up compromising on a stilted garage entry.

Acts As Safety Guard:

If you don’t want to spend much and want to protect your home the cheapest option would be to reinforce your garage door by installing pressure or impact resistant devices, such as shutters, panels and accordion fold shutters on the garage doors. You may also install pressure or impact resistant garage doors that do not require shutters. You can install an approved garage door bracing system to increase the wind pressure resistance if your existing door is impact resistant but it is not wind pressure rated that ensures that the device meets the wind pressure and debris impact requirements.

The first mechanized garage door systems, while a far cry from the automatic garage door openers of today, were introduced nearly six decades ago, to replace the earliest garage doors which were really nothing more than smaller versions of barn doors, using strap hinges to open out. The heavy demand placed on those first garage doors meant that their hinges would wear out in a relatively brief time. And any one living in a climate with snowy winters would face the additional problem of having to shovel any snowdrifts which were blocking access to the garage doors before being able to open them.

But sliding tracks for garage doors came along, and not only made the doors much more durable and easier to manage; they saved a terrific amount of space in the home owner’s driveway by not opening outward. They did, however, mean that even for a single car family, the garage would have to be wide enough to handle two doors. The first garage door system remotely resembling the automatic garage door opener was the overhead garage door with an electric door opener, which C.G. Johnson produced in 1926 to aid people with back problems in lifting their garage doors.

Automatic Garage Door Openers

The automatic garage door openers of the 21st century are only distantly related to Mr. Johnson’s efforts, and have become a standard feature in millions of American homes. Automatic garage door openers are an investment in your home’s security, allowing you to keep intruders from entering your home without having to lock the door leading from the garage to its interior. Automatic garage door openers spare you the inconvenience of having to get out of your car to open or close your garage door when it’s cold, dark, or inclement outside, and they spare you the physical effort of raising a heavy door.

How Automatic Garage Doors Are Built

Automatic garage door opener systems are quite complex, including their remote controls which you keep in your cars, their transmitters and key pads, safety sensors, screw drives, and receiver kits.

Automatic garage door opener systems have springs which assist in lifting the door so that their motors do less work. If for some reason the automatic garage door opener is not available or has stopped working, t he springs also make it possible to raise the door manually. But if you should ever have to raise your automatic garage door by hand, please remember that its springs are dangerous and simply packed with potential energy which can cause them to snap and cause serious injury.

Benefits of Automatic Garage Door Openers

The benefits of automatic garage door openers, however, far outweigh their risks. By allowing the garage door to roll up and remain out of sight, they make it easy for homeowners to access equipment normally stored in the garage when they are doing yard or house chores. Automatic garage door openers operate smoothly and silently, and best of all, they are easy to install so that anyone can make an automatic garage door investment in his or her home!
